Of course, there's more than just chrome up front. The grille has been updated with Acura's "power plenum" design and the aluminum hood is now "blow-formed" to assure its almost perfectly flat shape. There are five new exterior colors as well.

With styling that's sporty but less substantial than its competitors', and no available V8, the RL has been somewhat of an also-ran in its category. There's still no V8, but for 2009 the RL gets bolder new sheetmetal, more power and even more cool technology. In addition to weather information and traffic rerouting, the RL will offer Bluetooth audio functionality for wireless access to digital music on cell phones and music players. The slightly bigger 3.7-liter V6 delivers 300 horsepower (up from 290) and 271 pound-feet of torque (versus 256). Pricing hasn't been announced, but the revamped RL goes on sale Spring 2008. However, the rear door on the impacted side became unlatched in the side impact test and the car lost one point.Child-protectionIt is not possible to disable the front passenger's airbag so a rearward-facing child restraint should not be used in that seating position. The presence of ISOFIX anchorages in the rear outboard seats was not clearly marked.Pedestrian protectionThe car detects when a pedestrian has been struck and has a mechanism to pop up the bonnet, increasing the gap between the bonnet surface and hard components in the engine bay. The bumper scored maximum points for the protection it offered to pedestrians' legs.
